ON BOARDING THE VESSEL WRITE YOUR NAME, RANK AND SIGN GANGWAY LOG BOOK.
TAKE YOUR LUGGAGE TO THE COMMON AREA/SHIP DESIGNATED OFFICE WHERE YOU WILL BE MEETING SHIP'S OFFICER ON DUTY.
AT FIRST OPPORTUNITY, HANDOVER ALL YOUR JOINING DOCUMENTS TO THE MASTER OR MASTER'S AUTHORIZED OFFICER WHO COULD BE IN GENERAL, THIRD DECK OFFICER.
REPORT TO MASTER AND CHIEF ENGINEER.
CHIEF ENGINEER WOULD APPRAISE YOUR GENERAL DUTIES, SHIPBOARD PRACTICES AND DISCIPLINE.
REPORT TO SECOND ENGINEER WHO WILL BE YOUR SUPERIOR FOR DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS.
YOUR IMMEDIATE DUTY WOULD FIRST BE TO FAMILIARIZE WITH VARIOUS SAFETY EQUIPMENTS, YOUR DESIGNATED DUTIES FOR SHIPBOARD EMERGENCY.
SHIP SAFETY OFFICER OR HIS DESIGNATED OFFICER WOULD BE TAKING YOU AROUND TO FAMILIARIZE WITH THESE LIFE SAVING AND FIRE FIGHTING APPLIANCES.
ONCE YOU ARE REASONABLY FAMILIAR WITH ABOVE W.R.T LOCATION, THERE USE AND HOW TO USE YOU SHALL SHOW YOUR OWN INITIATIVE IN GETTING FAMILIAR WITH ENGINE ROOM, EQUIPMENT, THEIR SAFEGUARDS, YOUR PROTECTION GEAR.
NOTE: INITIATIVE IS A KEYWORD TO LEARNING AND SUCCESS. THIS IS WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO SPEND REST OF YOUR TIME IN BUILDING CARRIER.
RECOMMENDED FAMILIARIZE SEQUENCE:
RECOGNIZING AND GETTING USED TO DIFFERENT VISUAL AND AUDIBLE TONES
1. MACHINERY ALARM
2. FIRE ALARM
3. TELEPHONE ALARM
4. CO2 RELEASE ALARM

AT THIS POINT YOU SHOULD ONLY SILENCE THE ALARM BELLS, BUT DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE FLASHING ALARM LIGHTS, UNTIL YOU ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ALARM. ASSESS YOURSELF THE CRITICALITY OF THE ALARM AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHETHER YOU ARE COMPETENT TO RECTIFY THE ALARM CONDITION.
YOU NEED TO BE TRAINED AND FAMILIARIZED WITH THE VARIOUS PROCESSES AND SYSTEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE MACHINERY CONTROL.
HERE IS THE IMPORTANT POINT YOU MUST NOTE:
YOUR SENIORS ARE A HIGHLY STRESSED PEOPLE, SO GET TO KNOW IN COMMON THE VARIOUS SYSTEMS AND PROCESS INVOLVED IN RUNNING A SHIP WHICH IS BASICALLY A SEA TRANSPORT TAXI.
GENERALLY THE MERCHANDISE OR CARGO CARE TAKES PRIORITY AS COMMERCE IS INVOLVED WITH THIS AS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE ALL OTHER OBJECTIVES FORM SUPPORT SYSTEMS.
UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PRIORITY/CRITICALITY OF EQUIPMENTS AND WHY THEIR CARE IS IMPORTANT.
MONITORING THESE EQUIPMENTS FORM THE NEXT STEP OF YOUR TRAINING AND HANDLING THEM.
MONITORING INVOLVES GENERALLY READING AND RECORDING OF PARAMETERS SUCH AS PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, VIBERATION, VOLTAGE, AMPERAGE, RPM AND FLOW RATE.
